Iconic Hotel del Coronado Set to Transport Guests to a Land of Oz with Emerald City-Inspired Splendor and Whimsical Programming for the 2025 Holiday Season

SAN DIEGO (Sept. 4, 2025) – Today, the legendary Hotel del Coronado announced its annual holiday theme: “A Holiday in Oz.” The theme celebrates the hotel’s storied connection to author L. Frank Baum, who traveled frequently to The Del between 1904 and 1917. It was here, inspired by the hotel’s enchanting seaside setting, that he penned at least three books in the iconic Wizard of Oz series, including Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz (1908), The Road to Oz (1909), and The Emerald City of Oz (1910). This year, that literary magic will be brought to life with stunning themed trees and décor, thousands of glittering lights, festive feasts in the iconic Crown Room where Baum himself famously designed the magnificent crown-shaped chandeliers, and enchanting experiences for the whole family.

New this year, the recently restored Victorian Garden Courtyard will be reimagined as a whimsical passage to Oz, serving as the centerpiece for the all-new Tinsel Trail to Oz. A projected yellow brick road will guide visitors through a landscape of giant glowing dandelions and electric poppies. This path, a key part of the resort-wide trail, will be lined with four magnificent 12-foot trees, each artfully decorated to honor L. Frank Baum’s beloved characters: Dorothy & Toto, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion. The season also marks the return of cherished traditions, including the magnificent two-story Christmas tree in the lobby and the iconic Skating by the Sea®. Guests can also enjoy a redesigned “Wonder of Oz” Dynamic Light Show, cozy Beachside Igloos, the festive Frostbite Lounge, and special holiday dining. In the spirit of the season, The Del will once again partner with Make-A-Wish® San Diego, donating a portion of proceeds from Skating by the Sea® to help grant life-changing wishes.

The Del has become a worldwide holiday destination, beckoning with unique, world-class experiences. The hotel’s timeless allure captured Baum’s imagination, prompting him to write in a 1905 poem about Coronado, “And every day her loveliness shines pure, without a flaw; new charms entrance our every glance, and fill our souls with awe!” The celebrations will kick off on November 21, 2025, and last through January 4, 2026. Those looking to stay overnight can enjoy the newly-restored guestrooms in the historic Victorian building, which was unveiled as part of The Del’s completion of its more than six-year, $550M restoration.

The following activities and offerings will be available for the 2025 season:

  • Skating by the Sea (Nov. 21-Jan. 4) – California’s most recognizable and scenic ice rink welcomes skaters of all ages with an incomparable backdrop of the stunning Pacific Ocean and The Del’s iconic red turret on the hotel’s Windsor Lawn. A portion of the Skating by the Sea proceeds will once again benefit Make-A-Wish® San Diego. Tickets are $40-$45 per person for general admission, with a $5 discount for hotel guests, members, military, and first responders; each Skating by the Sea session is 90 minutes.
  • Frostbite – A Place to Chill (Nov. 21-Jan. 4) – Frostbite offers the best seat in the house. Cozy fire pits and luxury lounges trim the ice rink on an elevated platform where guests can relax with spectacular skating and sunset views while sipping holiday drinks and nibbling gourmet bites. Guests will enjoy the festive rink-side spectacle of lights, laughter, and holiday fun. Each lounge area can seat between 4-8 people and can be reserved for 90 minutes with a required food and beverage minimum per person.
  • Beachside Igloos (Nov. 21-Jan. 4) – Guests and locals can enjoy a unique Beachside Igloo featuring a cozy living room that comfortably accommodates up to eight guests. The experience also includes a roaring fire pit, ingredients for premium s’mores, and a dedicated server ready to deliver holiday-themed libations and snacks. Beachside Igloos can be reserved for two hours.
  • “Wonder of Oz” Lightshow Spectacular (Nov. 21-Jan. 4) – Experience a dazzling, Oz-themed light show on the Founders Lawn, featuring the famed 1904 Norfolk Pine—the world’s first electrically lit outdoor Christmas tree. With a whimsical Oz-inspired soundtrack and a flurry of snow for a finale, this complimentary show runs nightly every 30 minutes from 5-9 p.m. and is open to all. Enjoy the perfect view from the turret-shaped bar and festive lounge, plus a towering 22-foot Wicked Witch-themed Christmas tree.

Revitalization of Victorian Building Marks Culmination of Property-Wide Renovation

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (June 18, 2025) – The legendary Hotel del Coronado today announced the completion of the revitalization of its iconic Victorian building, the final milestone in Blackstone Real Estate’s more than $550 million restoration plan to enhance and reinforce Hotel del Coronado’s legacy for generations to come.

“From its earliest days, Hotel del Coronado has been a pioneer, continuously redefining the resort experience,” said JP Oliver, managing director, Hotel del Coronado. “After this transformative journey, we are proud to set a new benchmark for resort excellence and continue exceeding expectations for a new era of guests and visitors.”

The completion of the Victorian Neighborhood encompassed a total restoration of its front porch and lobby, main entry, and drive experience, as well as updates and enhancements to all Victorian guestrooms, the Victorian garden courtyard, event spaces (including the iconic Crown Room), and the addition of two new dining destinations: the acclaimed Nobu Del Coronado and Veranda, an al fresco dining experience with breathtaking ocean views.

Rob Harper, head of asset management Americas at Blackstone Real Estate, said, “Blackstone has been dedicated to preserving Hotel del Coronado’s iconic status as a National Historic Landmark while ensuring it remains a timeless destination for future generations. We are so proud of the thoughtful collaboration that brought this more than $550 million project to fruition and are thrilled by Hotel del Coronado’s transformation into a modern, premier hotel for the enjoyment of guests, visitors, and the San Diego community.”

Bringing together top design and architecture talent, the meticulously executed, full property-wide restoration prioritized historical accuracy. Collaborators included Wimberly Interiors, in partnership with WATG, and GSB Inc., Burton Studios, who served as Architect of Record for the Victorian Garden Courtyard, and David Marshall of Heritage Architecture & Planning, who provided historical architecture consultation throughout the duration of the project.

Victorian Charm, Modern Comfort in Revitalized Guest Rooms

Hotel del Coronado’s revitalized Victorian guest rooms elevate the property’s rich heritage with luxurious modern accents. Reflecting the building’s history, no two guest rooms are exactly alike, adding to the property’s unique charm. The design reimagines Victorian aesthetics with brighter floral textiles, a refreshing departure from the typically darker palettes of that era. Furnishings thoughtfully combine caning and wicker with deep wood tones, achieving a balance of richness and airy texture for a timeless yet fresh ambiance. Headboards, while retaining classic curved silhouettes, are crafted from woven vinyl raffia, and floral wallcoverings reference the hotel’s lush gardens. The lighting scheme seamlessly integrates both modern and traditional designs, utilizing diverse materials. Bathrooms have been redesigned for optimal functionality, featuring spacious vanities inspired by antique washstands and classic checkerboard marble flooring. Artwork throughout the rooms presents vintage sketches and drawings through a modern lens, exemplified by dramatic black-and-white botanical photography. Victorian-inspired light fixtures and blue and white Chinoiserie lamps introduce notes of romantic elegance, while carefully placed trims and tassels offer subtle Victorian detailing.

Veranda Restaurant: A Modern Interpretation of Hotel del Coronado’s Historic Veranda

Drawing inspiration from the hotel’s historic wraparound veranda, Hotel del Coronado’s Veranda restaurant captures the charm and elegance of the property’s past while embracing contemporary design. When Hotel del Coronado opened in 1888, a 20-foot-wide veranda encircled the building, offering a continuous walk of 1,800 feet around the hotel. This iconic feature allowed visitors to take in the soothing ocean breeze and symbolized the hotel’s historic charm. The restaurant’s menu pays homage to Hotel del Coronado’s Southern California roots with a focus on locally sourced ingredients and purveyor partnerships. Guests can enjoy starters like grilled California Artichokes or broiled West Coast Oysters with rich chorizo butter, and entrees including American classics with a twist like Veranda’s French Dip, grilled Whole Red Mountain Trout Noisette, Certified Angus Beef Steaks, and a Dungeness Crab “Wedge.”

Nobu Del Coronado: A Fusion of Global Culinary Artistry and Local California Flavors

Nobu Del Coronado seamlessly blends Chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s signature style with Hotel del Coronado’s timeless elegance. Nobu Del Coronado guests can indulge in an array of Nobu-signature dishes, including Black Cod with Miso, Squid ‘Pasta’ with Garlic Sauce and A5 Wagyu, alongside Nobu’s innovative sushi creations. The concept also offers a selection of locally inspired, Southern California dishes unique to Nobu Del Coronado like Tai Sweet Shiso, Lobster Truffle Tempura, Beef Kushiyaki Skewers and more. The outdoor-indoor restaurant features 156 seats, 120 of which are beautifully situated al fresco, with scenic views of the Pacific Ocean, as well as a dedicated eight-seat sushi bar and stylish 12-seat Pagoda Bar, offering curated selections of sake, Japanese whiskeys and innovative cocktails. The restaurant also boasts 3,700 square feet of oceanfront dining space that serves as a breathtaking venue for private events.

Elevated Meeting, Group, and Event Venues

Hotel del Coronado’s legendary Victorian ballrooms – the Crown Room, Coronet Room, and Ocean Ballroom – have all undergone a meticulous restoration. These revitalized spaces seamlessly integrate historical preservation with state-of-the-art technology and design. Key features include a rediscovered and thoughtfully preserved 1888 fresco in the Ocean Ballroom, beautifully refinished original wood floors, expertly rehabilitated historic wood finishes, carefully restored doors and a balcony, recreation of historical wainscoting, and installation of updated lighting and sound systems.

Fully Restored Garden Courtyard

The Victorian building’s central garden courtyard has been carefully returned to its original design, complete with historic walkways and pergolas. Adding to this revitalization is the return of the cherished Naiad Queen Fountain, showcasing a bronze reproduction of Charles Cordier’s “Naiad Queen” statue. This recreation, expertly crafted by Carapace Arts using a mold from an original J.L. Mott Iron Works duplicate, reinstates a significant feature that graced the space until 1912. The Garden will further captivate visitors with an eclectic array of Victorian-era botanicals, including bromeliads, camellias, cycads, agaves, citrus, hydrangeas, daylilies, ferns, and specimen palms, thoughtfully integrated with the courtyard’s established tree ferns, foss silk tree, and queen palms.

Beyond the completion of the Victorian Neighborhood, Blackstone’s comprehensive development has also transformed the entire resort, including the launch of Serẽa Coastal Cuisine; the addition of Shore House, part of LXR Hotels & Resorts, a distinctive oceanfront residential experience in a modern beach house setting; Southpointe event center—boasting a 15,000-square-foot ballroom and adjoining lawn; the debut of the Ocean Club in the historic Windsor Cottage, and a full renovation of Beach Village, LXR Hotels & Resorts, an enclave of oceanfront cottages and villas. The restoration also introduced revitalized guestrooms in The Cabanas and Views neighborhoods, along with upgrades to other dining venues; a reimagined Spa & Salon at The Del and expanded Fitness Center; development of the historical Ice House Museum, as well as new meeting spaces, and retail experiences at The Shops at The Del. Over the course of the revitalization, more than 300 resort jobs have been created. In addition, thousands of construction jobs were created over the course of the construction.

Hotel del Coronado is located at 1500 Orange Ave., Coronado, CA 92118. For more information about Hotel del Coronado or to book leisure or business travel, visit hoteldel.com or call (619) 435-6611.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – (March 12, 2025) – Today, San Diego’s iconic Hotel del Coronado announces a brand new culinary concept, Veranda, set to debut in April 2025 in the space formerly known as Sheerwater. As part of the hotel’s extensive $550 million revitalization project, Veranda will feature a lush, garden-inspired design and offer an al fresco dining experience in a remarkable oceanfront setting. This exciting addition joins the highly anticipated Nobu Del Coronado, set to open in May 2025, further solidifying The Del as a premier culinary destination.

Drawing inspiration from the hotel’s historic wraparound veranda, Veranda restaurant captures the charm and elegance of The Del’s past while embracing contemporary design. When Hotel del Coronado opened in 1888, a 20-foot-wide veranda encircled the building, offering a continuous walk of 1,800 feet around the hotel. This iconic feature allowed visitors to take in the soothing ocean breeze and remains a symbol of the hotel’s historic charm.

The restaurant’s menu pays homage to Hotel del Coronado’s Southern California roots, celebrating the area’s rich culinary traditions with a focus on locally sourced ingredients and purveyor partnerships. Guests can enjoy starters like grilled California Artichokes or broiled West Coast Oysters with rich chorizo butter, and entrees including American classics with a twist like Veranda’s French Dip, grilled Whole Red Mountain Trout Noisette, Certified Angus Beef Steaks and a Dungeness Crab “Wedge”.

Veranda will also offer specialty nights, such as Wednesday’s signature fried chicken, Thursday’s herb-crusted Creekstone prime rib, and Friday’s seafood boil with Maine lobster tail, Sea Cortez shrimp, and Dungeness crab. The cocktail menu will include timeless classics with a modern twist, complemented by a California-forward wine list that highlights both beloved favorites and exciting new discoveries.

“Veranda is designed to be a gathering place where guests can relax, connect, and enjoy exceptional food with breathtaking views,” says Executive Chef Brian Archibald. “We’ve created a menu that complements the restaurant’s inviting atmosphere, offering both familiar favorites and exciting new flavors.”

The restaurant will offer 159 seats in total, including 18 indoor seats, creating an intimate atmosphere that blends casual comfort with modern elegance. In the spirit of the hotel’s original wraparound veranda where guests strolled, mingled, and lounged to take in the sea air, Veranda invites guests to gather with family and friends and enjoy delicious food, rich conversation, and remarkable views of the Pacific Ocean.

Bringing The Del into a new era, The Del’s transformative six-year revitalization culminates in June 2025 with the completion of a $160+ million restoration of the iconic Victorian building. Guests will experience the timeless magic of the original hotel, where every room boasts its own distinct personality and historical charm. Bookings are now available for stays.

Iconic Victorian Ballrooms Now Available for Booking, Providing Stunning New Options for Meetings and Events at The Del Revealed as Part of Blackstone’s More Than $550 Million Restoration of Hotel del Coronado

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Aug 8, 2024) – The Hotel del Coronado, part of Curio Collection by Hilton, today announced its iconic Victorian ballrooms—the Crown Room, Coronet Room, and Ocean Ballroom are officially available for events, weddings, meetings and group bookings. Part of a thoughtful $160 million restoration and meticulous preservation effort to enhance the legendary Victorian building, its event spaces are now available for bookings ahead of the official reopening in early 2025.

Built in 1888 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977, Hotel del Coronado is an American treasure steeped in over 135 years of history — an original part of the living seaside legend, the property’s Victorian Crown and Coronet Rooms have welcomed Hollywood celebrities, dignitaries and U.S. Presidents through its doors for nearly two centuries, and played host to some of America’s most iconic silver-screen moments, historic political speeches and momentous celebrations alike.

Spearheaded by historical design firm Heritage Architecture & Planning and backed by Blackstone’s more than $550 million restoration and revitalization of Hotel del Coronado, the Crown and Coronet Rooms as well as the Ocean Ballroom have been expertly preserved.  This restoration work honors the storied past of these iconic ballrooms, while elevating the spaces with modern, state-of-the-art technology, design enhancements, restored original finishes, and more to support the needs of meetings, groups, incentives and wedding guests today.

The restoration and renovation of these ballrooms include:

  • The discovery and preservation of an original ceiling fresco secco from 1888 by artists William Busch and Jacob Gumpertz. The fresco secco was painstakingly restored as part of the Ocean Ballroom revitalization
  • A refinished original wood stage floor in the Ocean Ballroom
  • Extensive rehabilitation of historic wood finishes (stripping, repairing, and staining) within the Crown and Coronet Rooms
  • Restoration of the original wood doors leading from the lobby into the Crown and Coronet Rooms
  • Restoration of the Crown Room balcony
  • Recreation of the Coronet Room’s historical coffered wainscot
  • Restoration of the historic crown pendant fixtures in Crown and Coronet Rooms
  • All new lighting, background music system with built-in speakers and touchpad controls

“The Del has been a timeless destination for over 135 years, and the completion of The Victorian neighborhood and the Crown and Coronet Rooms is rooted in a deep respect for The Del’s legacy, much like our larger restoration commitment,” said Rob Harper, head of real estate asset management Americas at Blackstone. “We are proud of our investment and the thoughtful work undertaken to revitalize the Victorian building to ensure it is enjoyed by generations of guests to come.”

David Marshall of Heritage Architecture & Planning has led The Victorian restoration effort with the same vigor and attention to detail that awarded the firm a “Preservation Project of The Year” honor from the Save Our Heritage Organization, as well as a “Preservation Design Award” from the California Preservation Foundation following their extensive and diligent reconstruction of the hotel’s front porch and historic Victorian lobby.

“It has been an honor to be a part of the restoration and preservation of one of America’s most iconic resorts,” said David Marshall, president, Heritage Architecture and Planning. “As we near completion of the Victorian building, the debut of these iconic meeting spaces marks a significant milestone for our preservation efforts that will elevate the guest experience to new heights.”

The Crown, Coronet and Ocean Ballroom meeting spaces are available for bookings here. For additional information on The Del’s enhancements, please visit www.hoteldel.com.

Victorian Building to Open Doors to Guests Beginning March 1st, 2025 as Blackstone’s More Than $550 Million Restoration Plan Nears Completion

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – ( July 10, 2024) – The legendary Hotel del Coronado, part of Curio Collection by Hilton, today announced it is now accepting room reservations for stays in the newly restored Victorian building guest rooms beginning March 1, 2025.

Over $160 million has been invested to revitalize the Victorian building, and the opening of its guest rooms will mark an important milestone in Blackstone’s more than $550 million restoration plan. Prior to the reopening of the guest rooms, Hotel del Coronado will reveal its newly renovated Crown and Coronet Rooms, which have been thoughtfully restored and made available for meetings, events and groups bookings starting in July 2024. The completion of the Victorian building guest rooms will mark the crowning moment of the multi-year, multi-phase renovation that has preserved and enhanced this National Historic Landmark.

“It has been an honor to be a part of this journey of reinvention of an iconic landmark and one-of-a-kind resort,” said Sanjiv Hulugalle, managing director, Hotel del Coronado. “The Victorian building is the most widely recognized part of this historic property, and our significant preservation efforts will elevate the guest experience to new heights with the reopening of the Victorian neighborhood.”

“The Del has been an iconic and timeless destination for over 135 years, and Blackstone’s more than $550 million restoration process has been rooted in a deep respect for its legacy,” said Rob Harper, head of real estate asset management Americas at Blackstone. “We are proud of our investment and the thoughtful work that has been done to revitalize the Victorian building for the next generation of guests, and we look forward to its completion.”

Led by Wimberly Interiors in partnership with WATG’s California architecture studio, the restoration of the Victorian building aims to celebrate the legacy of the property and ensure the revitalized guest rooms incorporate modern amenities, comforts and luxuries. Guest rooms boast restored original finishes, design enhancements to bathrooms, furnishing and artwork, and state-of-the-art technologies. David Marshall of Heritage Architecture & Planning has led The Victorian guestroom redesign effort with the same vigor and attention to detail that awarded the firm a “Preservation Project of The Year” honor from the Save Our Heritage Organization, as well as a “Preservation Design Award” from the California Preservation Foundation following their extensive and diligent reconstruction of the hotel’s front porch and historic Victorian lobby.

Hotel del Coronado embarked on a renovation and development plan in 2018 to ensure the resort remains a sought-after destination. Completed elements of the overall revitalization include:

Through this partnership, Hotel del Coronado Donated Hundreds of Pieces of Furniture, Electronics and Appliances to the San Diego Habitat for Humanity ReStore

SAN DIEGO – (March  11, 2024) – Today, the legendary Hotel del Coronado, part of Curio Collection by Hilton, and San Diego Habitat for Humanity have officially announced their partnership in an effort to create positive change and build stronger, local communities.

As part of the historic Hotel del Coronado’s exciting restoration of its iconic Victorian Neighborhood, and as a testament to the resort’s commitment to giving back to local organizations, the hotel has donated a substantial amount of high-quality furniture to the San Diego Habitat for Humanity ReStore. The ReStore, established in 1998, is San Diego Habitat’s retail social enterprise that resells furniture and building materials. With an online store and two locations serving San Diego County – Kearny Mesa and National City – every dollar earned by the ReStore goes towards the construction of new affordable housing for working San Diegans.

The donation encompasses a diverse range of modern furnishings and appliances from the Victorian Neighborhood guestrooms, which are currently being revitalized. This partnership amplifies the positive impact local businesses can make when collaborating with community-focused organizations.

“Through this partnership, we have diverted 72 tons from the landfill and anticipate a significant outcome as it represents a donation ranging from $90,000 – $150,000 or more,” said Kwofi Reed, CEO of San Diego Habitat for Humanity. “This financial support is critical in empowering our mission of providing affordable housing solutions. Hotel del Coronado’s commitment to giving back is inspiring and what makes this collaboration truly impactful is the understanding that corporate partnerships, like this one, play a vital role in creating lasting change within our communities.”

“When we embarked on this restoration, we knew it was vital for us to consider the broader impact on our community and how we can best continue to give back,” said Sanjiv Hulugalle, managing director, Hotel del Coronado. “Teaming up with San Diego Habitat for Humanity allows us to do just that, and we are so pleased to know that the furniture and appliances The Del is providing will be beneficial to the San Diego community. Through this partnership, we can become catalysts for positive change, creating a legacy that extends far beyond our own walls.”

The heart of this partnership lies in the transformative impact it will have on the San Diego community. The donated items are available for sale to the public at the San Diego ReStore with all proceeds directly supporting the organization’s mission to build affordable homes for families in need.

HOTEL DEL CORONADO ANNOUNCES MORE THAN $160 MILLION RESTORATION AND REVITALIZATION OF HISTORIC VICTORIAN BUILDING

Represents Final Phase of Blackstone Real Estate’s More Than $550 Million Investment in the Property

SAN DIEGO, Calif.  (October 16, 2023) –  The legendary Hotel del Coronado, part of Curio Collection by Hilton, has announced plans to restore and revitalize the hotel’s historic Victorian building with a more than $160 million investment, marking the next and final phase of Blackstone Real Estate’s more than $550 million development plan to preserve and enhance the National Historic Landmark property for the enjoyment of guests, visitors and the community alike. The upgrades will encompass all Victorian guestrooms, suites and event spaces such as the iconic Crown Room, with a targeted completion date of Spring 2025.

“We are thrilled to embark on this exciting and final journey of Blackstone’s investment in this one-of-a-kind resort,” said Harold Rapoza, managing director, Hotel del Coronado. “The Victorian building holds a special place in the hearts of our guests, and we are dedicated to preserving its historical significance while elevating the bespoke guest experience to new heights.”

Rob Harper, head of real estate asset management Americas at Blackstone added, “Since our more than $550 million investment plan began in 2018, we have worked diligently to preserve The Del as a National Historic Landmark while cementing the property’s status as an iconic and timeless destination for generations to come. We are immensely proud of the thoughtful work completed to date and look forward to partnering with the local teams to make this next phase of the project a reality.”

For more than 135 years, Hotel del Coronado has welcomed travelers from all over the world to experience the best of Southern California coastal lifestyle.
